The Northeast Biomedical Research Center (CIBIN) is one of the five research centers in Mexico that belong to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).

History of the CIBIN

On March 1, 1974, with the approval of senior central authorities and the support of Dr. José Luis Mateos, who was the head of the Scientific Research Subdirectorate, as well as Dr. Raúl Calderón González, who was the director of the General Hospital of Zone No. 21 (now the High Specialty Medical Unit No. 21) in Monterrey, Nuevo León, two laboratories on the sixth floor of the hospital were equipped and furnished for research. Thus, the first research laboratory located outside the Federal District was established, marking the beginning of the Northeast Biomedical Research Unit (UNIBIN), which started with its founding director, Dr. Gilberto Molina Ballesteros, along with Dr. Raúl Garza Chapa. Later, three research assistants joined these two researchers: M. C. Carlos Humberto Leal Garza, Q.B.P. Miguel Ángel Zúñiga Charles, and Dr. Mercedes Álvarez Leal.

In September 1976, as the director of the Northeast Biomedical Research Unit, Dr. Gilberto Molina Ballesteros was granted a building located at 501 2 de abril (Jesús Dionisio González) Street, in the Independencia neighborhood of Monterrey, covering an approximate area of 2,239 m². Dr. Molina served as director of this Unit for two terms: the first from 1974 to 1980 and the second from 1982 to 1984. In addition to Dr. Molina, only five researchers have held the position of director: Dr. Francisco Javier Sánchez Ansaldo from 1980 to 1982; Dr. Gerardo Forsback Sánchez from 1984 to 1989; Dr. Salvador Saíd Fernández from 1989 to 2010; Dr. Javier Vargas Villarreal from 2010 to 2023; and currently, Dr. Mario Abelardo Bermúdez de León.

The Northeast Biomedical Research Unit became the Northeast Biomedical Research Center on August 1, 1993.
